S.E.A.R.C.H. (Seek Elderly Alone: Renew Courage & Hope)
We recently sat down with Gabe, a long-time volunteer from Auburn, to learn about his experience with our S.E.A.R.C.H. program.
How long have you been volunteering with S.E.A.R.C.H.?
14 years. I started out doing more odd jobs for people in need, then later on, I began visiting clients. I am currently matched with two elderly people.
What are typical things you do with your clients?
I drive them places, take them shopping and to appointments, call them to check in, and just visit and spend time with them. I’ve found that taking people out of the house to social events can help to improve their outlook on life.
What is the most enjoyable part of the experience?
Each year I host the annual S.E.A.R.C.H. picnic at my farm. This event brings everyone together, including clients, volunteers, and program staff. Many of us know each other already, but we also get to meet new people. Everyone has a story to tell.
What have you gained from being a S.E.A.R.C.H. volunteer?
I have learned that everyone has their own issues and that it can take a while to understand a client, but eventually you can develop a supportive relationship.
Being a S.E.A.R.C.H. volunteer has definitely made me appreciate my own life more, too. I see the different situations that people are in, and I feel very lucky and glad that I am able to help others.
Would you recommend this opportunity to others?
I would recommend volunteering with S.E.A.R.C.H. to anyone who has the time and is interested in helping others. My sister even did it for a while. I think it fits the culture here in Maine -- how we’re all used to helping one another out.
