Catholic Charities Maine Receives Grant from the Aquinas Fund of the Maine Community Foundation

May 29, 2012

Portland, ME – Catholic Charities Maine today announced it has been awarded a grant totaling $3,000 by the Aquinas Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. This investment will benefit the Home Supplies & Food Bank and be used to purchase food items to supply the 25 food pantries served in Aroostook County.

“We are most appreciative of this grant and of the support of the Maine Community Foundation in supporting our mission to ensure none of our neighbors in Maine go hungry,” says Stephen P. Letourneau, CEO of Catholic Charities Maine.

Every community in Aroostook County is serviced by one of our 25 food pantries offering a variety of vital necessities, from cereal, soup, pasta, and canned vegetables and fruit to frozen meats and cakes and fresh vegetables, eggs, cheese, and milk.

“The need has never been greater,” adds Dixie Shaw, program director, “It takes at least a tractor-trailer load of food each month to supply the most basic needs of our pantries.”

In 2011 food was provided to 28,357 people in need ─ an increase of 51% from 2010.
