Catholic Charities and Marden’s Team Up to Aid Augusta Fire Victims
(Portland, ME) — Catholic Charities Maine (CCM) announced today that it has received a grant of $10,000 from Catholic Charities USA for emergency disaster assistance for use in aiding victims of the Augusta fires that occurred earlier this month on State Street and Northern Avenue.
The grant has been generously matched with in-store purchasing power up to $10,000 by Marden’s. “We are so thankful to have the support of our national organization during this unforeseen crisis,” notes Stephen Letourneau, CEO of CCM. “And we are truly blessed to have a local business like Marden’s, a wonderful community partner, step up and enable us to do even more good by their generous matching offer.”
According to Craig Burgess, General Manager at Marden’s “We just wanted to help ensure those displaced by the fire could get the help they needed to get re-established as soon as possible – especially in light of the holiday season.”
The funds will be used to offset the costs associated with re-establishing permanent residences for the fire victims and will be overseen by a United Way case manager who has been designated to help assess the victims needs and coordinate services for them.
Catholic Charities Maine is working collaboratively as part of the Augusta Fire Relief Committee coordinated by United Way Kennebec Valley. The committee includes Red Cross, Augusta Housing, DHHS, City of Augusta, Maine VOAD, Maine Emergency Management Association, Salvation Army, and numerous other community organizations, churches, local business, and individuals who are helping to support the fire victims.
